ENGLAND’S BEAUTY.

PLEA FOR PRESERVATION. In the House of Commons, Mr H. G. Strauss (Con.. Norwich) protested reoently against the inadequate steps being 'taken to preserve the rural beauty of England. He said that there were coasts, hillsides. river banks, and lakes which should be completely free of buildings. Ribbon development on arterial roads was destroying the beauty of the countryside like a raging pestilence, and- tbe existing legislation was insufficient to stop it. Since local authorities were too poor to raise the money needed to save the beauty spots, the responsibility should be a national one.

The Minister for Health (Sir Kingsley Wood), in reply, gave examples of successful efforts of. local authorities to preserve beauty spots. The Minister’s reply is taken to mean that the Government does not intend to take any action.
