CIVIC AMENITIES.
(To the Editor.) Sir, —“Ratepayer,” in your issue of yesLerday, voices some grievances against the City Council. It he sees Hie Square Gardens in a year or so, he will find a vast improvement has been made as happened when the central part, tlirougn which the railway runs, was thoroughly tidied up. when the hedge, lonce, etc., were removed. As to his complaint about the condition of our Public Library, 1 quite agree with him. Thousands of the hooks are in a dilapidated condition. Also, it is impossible to read the titles of most of them, unless you puli them out, and carry them to where the light can fall upon them, so bad aie the lighting conditions. Most of the bookshelves are so placed that the light from the windows cannot reach them One obvious remedy for this dismal and deplorable state of matters is that the City Council should at once take steps to provide a new library, with windows on three sides, by building above the shops fronting Fitzherbert Avenue. The present library building could then be converted into a much desired museum for this thriving city.—l am, etc., ANOTHER RATEPAYER. July 21, 1937.
