/ FLIERS OFFICIALLY DEAD. HONOLULU. July 19. At sunset on Sunday the navy announced that the search for Mrs Amelia Putnam and her navigator, Mr F. J. Noonan, had ended, acknowledging the fliers to be officially dead.

The Lexington immediately set off for the mainland.

At Los Angeles Mr Putnam said he refused to believe his wife was dead. The New York Timos says the search was the greatest mass rescue effort ever made for a lost ’plane. Over 3000 men, ten ships, and 102 fighting ’planes participated, as well as an undisclosed number of Japanese aircraft.
