MANAWATU COMPETITIONS. ST. PATRICK’S LEAD. DEFEAT oFfEILDING. Though conditions were bitterly cold, the weather was fine for the continuation of the Manawatu Rugby Union’s football competitions on Saturday afternoon, when St. Patrick’s by beating Feilding, took the lead by one point in the second round of the senior competition over Kia Toa, who, however, are a match in arrears, and occupy second place on the ladder with Feilding. After holding their own in the first spell. Massey College went under decisively to Kia Toa. while Old -Boys easily accounted for Feilding Old Boys at Feilding. • THE SCORE BOARD. Feilding Old Boys defaulted to High School. FIFTH GRADE. P.N. High School B 3 v. Feilding H.S. 3. P.N. High School A won by default from Kia Toa.

SENIORS. Second Round

ST. PATRICK'S WIN. MATCH WITH FEILDING. Meeting Feilding on the Showgrounds oval, St. Patrick’s, who showed greater dash and more enterprise than their opponents, proved to he too good, and won by 9 points to 5. These teams played a drawn match in their last encounter. The teams on Satur do v were as follow :

St. Patrick’s. —Richards, IL Gillespie. Hampton, Donovan, M. Gillespie, Hehir, Edlin, L. Findlay, Powell, Ross, J. Anderson, E. Fell, Madgwick, Fowler, Kelliher. Feilding.—Stuckey, McKenzie, Bowyer, Sutherland, Waldin, Nicol, R. Brown, Newman, Nicholson, Sullivan, Spilman, Henson, Rosser, Kitchen, Morrison.

Feilding opened up a strong attack immediately, and took play into St. Patrick's territory, but the latter's fast backs got going and E. Fell received from M. Gillespie to race over in the corner. Powell tailed to convert from wide out. Shortly afterwards both Bowyer and Waldin missed chances to kick penalty goals for Feilding. St. Patrick’s then infringed right in front of their goal, but Stuckey could not pilot the ball between the posts. Donovan got away down the lino in a strong run and was tackled in the corner just in time by Bowyer. Waldi 4 then picked up in the ruck and transferred to Sullivan, who ran 40 yards before punting over Richards’s head, but was beaten in the race to the line for the ball. Brown next shot round the scrum smartly, and appeared to dive ovei', but no try was awarded. Continuing the pressure, the Feilding forwards nearly went straight over, but’Donovan secured to make another powerful run before being well grassed by Kitchen. M. Gillespie next despatched Donovan on the blind side, the winger flying oyer in the corner to score. Powell’s kick missed. Functioning well, the St. Patrick’s backs figured in another nice movement, M. Gillespie, 11. Gillespie and Hampton handling until the Instnamed was pushed out close to the Feilding line. R. Gillespie secured the ball from the ruck and raced away to centre cleverly, but McKenzie got to it just in time to prevent a try. St. Patrick’s led by 6 points to nil at the interval. Showing good form, the St. Patrick s backs settled down quickly again in the second spell, and Hampton was tackled right on the Feilding line, the visitors were under pressure and Donovan broke through, but was caught when nearly clear. The * eliding forwards rallied, but Findlay and Powell went through, taking play to the opposition line. Hamilton was again grassed when nearly across, anil a penalty kick by Powell fell just short of its objective. R. Gillespie was responsible for some good work 111 dummying the opposition, but the lending defence held. Edlin failed with a. penalty kick for St. Patrick’s. Waldin burst through f 9 r Feilding and then Kitchen, snatching up the bal from tho ruck, dashed straight over by the posts and Waldin converted. Just before the end of the match I-indlay made a nice opening close to the I< eliding line, and Ross received to dive over. Anderson failed to add the additional points, the match ending with the score: _ St. Patrick’s Feilding o. Mr G. Duthie was the referee.
