Mrs Humphrey presided over the monthly meeting of the Marton Junction Women’s Institute. It was reported that the instituteha d been placed sixth for their handcraft articles at the recent Palmerston North Show. Mrs Goile gave a demonstration on th making of rugs from waste material and displayed some of her beautiful mats. A vote of sympathy was passed with Mrs Slight, who bad suffered a bereavement. The competitions were as follow: Knitted petticoat, Mrs Matthews 1, Mrs Johnson 2, Mrs Low 3; flannel petticoat, Mrs Watts 1, Mrs Johnston 2, Mrs Matthews 3.
Dr. R. A. Church presided over the monthly meeting of tho Marton District High School committee last night. Tlie headmaster (Mr A. W. Tucker) reported that the primary department roll was 317, the average attendance being 295. The secondary department’s roll was 87, the average attendance being 83. Dr. N. Galpin, formerly of Marton, is in Edinburgh, working on the staff of the Institute of Animal Genetics, and she will probably be there for at least another year. The Mayor (Mr F. Purnell) presided over the monthly meeting of the Marton Borough Council on Monday. A firm of solicitors advised on behalf of Mr G*. Slrgeant. with reference to flooding on Mr Sargeant’s property at tho corner of French Street and Kitchener Street, that the work recently completed had not overcome the trouble and stating that it was considered the outlet from the railway subway was too small to deal witli the floodwater after heavy rain.— To be advised that an inspection would be made after the next heavy rain, and a report made. Tho treasurer's statement for the month from June 9 to July 12 showed receipts totalling £899 iGs. Building permits were issued in respect of a new house and alterations of a total value of £1042.
