MISCELLANEOUS CASES. Appearing before Mr J. L. Stout, S.M., in the Magistrate’s Court today, Peter John Crook, a labourer, aged 21, of Eketahuna, pleaded guilty to the theft, on Saturday at Palmerston North, of a coat and scarf valued at £4 14s 6d, the property of Claude Henry Burmeister. Senior-Sergeuat Mclntyre said that the owner had missed his coat and scarf from the cloak-room at the Empire Hall during a dance on Saturday but, when ho entered a restaurant later, he found accused there wearing his coat, and 60 notified the police. Mr Mclntyre stated that accused had previously l>een convicted of theft from a till in 1934.

Accused advanced the excuse that he had had a few drinks that night. He was convicted and sentenced to fourteen days’ imprisonment, being informed that it would teach him to leave other people’s property alone. Percival Charles Byrne, a woolscourer, aged 28, of Feilding, pleaded guilty to a charge of attempting to commit suichle on July 6. Air Mclntyre said that after l>eing off work for two days owing to illness, defendant was found in a bach with a wound six inches long in his throat. Defendant, whose explanation was that he had been depressed, was convicted and discharged. Charged with driving a car in Foxton Line without due care and attention, and with failure to possess a driver’s license, M. A. O’Reilly, who was stated to have knocked down a cyclist, was fined £l, with 13s costs, on the first charge, and 10s, with 10s costs, on the second charge.

For parking cars over fire plugs. D. P. Capper (Levin) and T. Gallns (AA'aituna West) were' each fined 10s, with 10s casts an the same charge.

Stated to be £43 18s in arrears on a maintenance order in favour of his wife, Joseph Lahood, a labourer, of Gisborne, was sentenced to three months’ imprisonment, the warrant to he suspended as long as he complies with the order and pays 7s (id weekly off the arrears.

George William Cameron, stated to be in arrears to the extent of £8 5s on a maintenance order for his wife and £5 10s for his children, was sentenced to one month’s imprisonment, the warrant to be suspended ns long as he complies with the orders and pays 5s weekly off the arrears. Elsie Margaret Goodwin was granted maintenance at the rate of £1 a week against her husband, Thomas Harry Goodwin, of Mangatainoka.
