INTER-ZONE FINAL.

DAVIS CUP MATCH. GERMANY V. AMERICA. LONDON, July 18. The first singles matches in the inter-zone final for the Davis .Cup between Germany and America results ed : G. von Cramm (Germany) beat B. M. Grant (America), (3—3, 6 —2, (3—4. J. Budge (America) beat H. Henkel (Germany), 6 —2, (3 —1, 6—3. Von Cramm and Grant made a dour beginning, each testing out the other. The German was more aggressive and his play increased in severity in the second set. His only uncertainty was his backhand. In the third set the German’s relentlessness increased his mastery. He outwitted Grant and swept to victory. Budge and Henkel opened with a long-range duel. Budge was a master of strokes, whereas foot-faulting unsteadied the German. Budge’s stroke supremacy was always manifest, except against Henkel’s occasional lightning aces. Henkel’s best patch was in the third set, but he lacked consistency in length. His smashing was an antidote to Budge’s tantalising lobs.
