(From Our Own Correspondent.) SHANNON, July 16.

At the Borough Council meeting on Tuesday evening Cr. Hyde reported that he had attended a meeting of local bodies held in Palmerston North, .when the Min ister of Labour had placed proposals before them to give full-time work to men on sustenance for four months. Cr. Hyde’s action in placing six men in the borough was endorsed. The Council on Wednesday inspected certain works suitable for the above and the men will start next Monda}'. Under similar conditions 10 men have been placed with the Buckley Drainage Board, and these men will bo placed on the formation work of the KopoturoaShannon direct road. It is understood that the settlers have given the land needed for this road. Money has been subscribed towards the cost of constructing a bridge. The Whitanui flax mill, which has been closed for some weeks, will reopen next week and this will further help to relieve the local unemployed situation. Much sympathy is extended to Mr and Mrs R. Prior in the death of their infant eon. Mr C. P. Orev, who has been an inmato of the Palmerston North Hospital for some weeks, returned homo last week, but will be leaving on Sunday to spend a week in Napier. Mr Grey has been secretary and treasurer of the Bowling and Croquet Club for the past five years, but

has intimated that lie will not be available next season. Mrs Retter, of Levin, is staying with her daughter, Mrs J. A. Roach. Mrs Retter is over 90 years of age. The Mayor (Mr E. Butt) is still confined to his home, though his health is improving. The Plunket Society’s nursfe in her report ending June 30 shows four visits to Shannon, and 22 to homes.
