COST OF GOVERNMENT.
FARMERS' CONCERN. W RULING TON. July 15. Grave concern at the increasing heavy cost of government due to recent additions to the Civil Service and to the appointment of numerous boards or committees with a paid personnel was expressed by the New Zealand Farmers’ Union at its annual conference. T.fr R. S. Thompson (Otago), who moved the adoption of the remit, said that last year the Civil Service, with its 48 departments, was increased by 3700 employees. At the low averagewage of £3 a week, the pay-roll was increased l>v £500.000. At £4 a week, the increase would be more than £750.000 a year. The Railways Department, in which farmers were particularly interested, had. according to the Minister, been involved by the 40hour week in an extra cost of £289,000.
