TERRACE END PIT

PROPOSED ACQUISITION. FURTHER ADVANCE MADE. For some considerable time the Palmerston North City Council has been negotiating with the Railway Department for the acquisition of the Terrace End gravel pit. the property of ihe department, with the Terrace End Progressive Association as a very interested party in the trend of developments. The association has strenuously advocated the securing of the nit .bv the city authorities, and the lieautification of the area. Events have now moved forward a step with a deputation waiting on the Railway Department- authorities in Wellington yes+erday. The members of the deputation were Messrs J. Hod rr ens. ALP. (also a niem-hu-rf the Citv Council!. G. Tremaine (l-ieputy-Afavor ami chairmen of the reserves committee of the City Council) and J. R. Hughes (city engineer). As the result of the first represeiYa-. tions made some time ago, the department offered the southern end of the pit +n the council for£lo. The council hid'not net on that offer, but said they wanted the whole of the pit. On further representations being made, the department agreed to release the whole of the pit provided the council found mother pit and installed a siding. Tlmt was found to he impossible. Prior to the recent, visit of Hon. P. C. Webb. acting-Minister of Labour, to this centre, the council in- ! structed the city engineer and file city curnlor (Mr P- Black) to prepare a plan for the beautification nf the nit. the council deciding to m-"ko further representations to see wliat would he the maximum area the department would release. The deputation yesterday waited on the General Manager of Railways. Mr G. H. Mncklev. who arranged for Messrs Tremaine and Himhes to inter- \ view other members of the department. Mr Tremaine to-dnv informed a “Standard” reporter that the further interview had been held with the engineering section of the department-. A very considerate reception had been accorded them and it had been niranged that departmental officials would visit Palmerston North shortly and discuss the matter further, and also inspect the site.
