PROGRESSIVE ASSOCIATION. The general committee of tho Takaro Progressive Association met at the residence of Mrs J. Denham on Tuesday, Mr E. H. Smith presiding. Before commencing the business of tho meeting the chairman paid a tribute to the memory of the late Mr N. H. Nash, a motion of condolence being passed with the relatives. The chairman said that the late Mr Nash had always given the association every support, not only in the news columns of the “Manawatu Standard,” but also editorially. The association had lost a good friend. The sympathy of the meeting was also extended to Mr W. Loveday, of Bryant Street, in the recent loss of Ins wife, and to Mrs J. Wnss, of Chelwood Street, in the loss of licr brother, the meeting standing as a mark of respect. Arising from the minutes it was remarked that the children’s basketball court was now ready to play on, games having been indulged in. The girls were very pleased with the facilities provided by the City Council and the association. A vote of thanks was passed to Mr H. Bird, of Shamrock Street, for his work in making the goal posts. Thanks were due to Air and Airs Foster and also Mr Jarrett, for help extended in this matter.

The chairman said he had talked over the question of entrances to the park with Air P. Black, the city curator, and the discussion showed the association’s ideas were considered practical. Air Cookslcy recalled instances of children injuring themselves by jumping the chains which at one time encircled the Square Gardens, suggesting perhaps a low concrete fence in place o chains might he bettor. It was decided to ask the council to tar-seal the footpath at the Chelwood Street entrance as soon as possible. Dealing with a letter regarding the flooding of the railway end of Burns Avenue, it was decided again to approach the City Council on this mattei. •as this flooding had occurred as recently as April last. Regarding a leply to a letter dealing with "the tar-sealing programme to be carried out during the ensuing year, wherein the council defined the streets to be sealed in the Takaro area, it was decided to point out to tlie council that tliese streets were not in what is popularly considered the district of Takaro, and at the same time to ask that any surplus from the fund be expended in the Takaro area. The filling in of the drain m Botanical Road and general improvements being carried out lo this part of the district were much appreciated by the association. The breaking away or the kerbing and footpath in Kingswood Street, at the intersection of Feathcrston Street, was remarked upon, it being decided to call the council’s attention to tliis. Residents had asked if it were possible to have another bus shelter erected in the district, the corner of Lyndlmrst Street and Cuba Street being suggested as a site. In a discussion, it was decided to ask the council to give favourable consideration to this matter. Air Hammond pointed out that the small strip of roadway in front of the Chelwood Street shops needed tarsealing, as in summer tlie dust entered the shops which supplied food and in wet weather it became decidedly muddy. This being a bus stop, the municipal buses were inclined to pull up close in to oblige passengers, thus endangering the watertnblc. The matter ot donating seats to be placed in the children’s playing area was discussed. Air Jarrett and Air Cooksley were appointed to go into the matter of seats suitable for the purpose, with power to purchase. It was also decided to ask the council to plant trees in this area, suitable for shade, it being remarked that the shady trees in the Esplanade attracted many people in the summertime. It' was decided again to approach the Wanganui Education Board regarding school facilities. A stamp-vending machine lias been a long-felt want in the district. Discussing this matter, it was decided to approach the postal authorities for further postal facilities, particularly a stamp-vending machine. Final arrangements for tlie annual reunion to bo held this month were gone into. The chairman expressed satisfaction at the big increase in the membership; last year’s membership had been 274 and this year’s had so far readied a total of 309—a very pleasing state of affairs. .. \ vote of thanks was passed to Airs Denham for the use of her residence, also to the chair.
