NO DEFENCE PACT.
GERMANY AND ITALY. HERR HITLER AVOOS BRITAIN. Received June 7, 9.45 a.m. LONDON, June 6. When Signor V. Gayda proclaimed an “Italo-German defensive entente as a sequel to General Werner von Blomberg’s visit to Rome British official quarters were convinced that no such pact had been concluded. The Australian Associated Press learns that this is now confirmed. Signor Alussolini is using every opportunity to piovoke public opinion here to capitalise and exaggerate the Italo-German rapprochement. On the other hand, Geimany’s, and particularly Herr Hitler s, mistrust and dislike of the Italians is in no-wise lessened. Herr Ilitlei is making strenuous efforts to follow up General von Blomberg’s successful Coronation visit to London by wooing Britain. The new Ambassador, Sir’ Neville Hendersons recent speech caused a . great fluttei in the European Chancelleries anu is being interpreted as a new British move to improve Anglo-German relations. Certainly, m the light of this, Herr Hitler will be anxious to do nothing to offend Britain. He is even desirous of pleasing London m connection with easing the tension m Sl The Daily Telegraph says that the Italo-German entente is confined to common defensive action against tutuie aggression by Moscow or Red Spam.
Sir Neville Henderson, the new British Ambassador to Berlin, in presenting bis credentials recently to Herr Hitler expressed the desire of the British Government to do all in its power to advance Anglo German understanding. Herr Hitler replied that, there was no question land and Germany that could not be set tied with collaboration and goodwill on both skies Sir Neville said: It is not i-m a lOi-mr ny wlien 1 -ay t ystart u.o in Germany with the firm intention of doing everything in my power to promote the cause of Anglo-German understanding, which is the desire of His Majesty, the British Government, and the pcop.e. I am convinced that there is no question between Britain and Gel-many that cannot be solved with mutual consideration and goodwill.” Herr Hitler replied: I sincerely welcome the communication.
