The franking system, by which members send mail fyee, has an unusual origin. This use of the word “frank” is due to the fact that in Frankish Gaul full freedom was possessed only by those belonging to, or adopted by, the dominant people. Hence frank came lo mean free. An old name for free trade was “frank traffic.”
