(Frcm Onr Own Correspondent.) SHANNON, June 5. It being exactly 50 years this month since the first land sale in Shannon, the Early Settlers’ Reunion Social arranged by the Women’s Institute as a Coronation celebration, on Wednesday evening, was most fitting," and the -wonderful response to the invitations was very gratifying. The president of the institute. Mrs C. Easton, extended a warm welcome to all and presented posies (made by Mrs W. Radford, senr., and Mrs J. llallatn) to Mrs Crowthcr (earliest settler, 49 years in Shannon), Mrs A. Venn (oldest settler, 86 years), the Mayoress (Mrs E. Butt, who was the first president), and Mrs T. Hcni-matt (oldest institute member). Sprigs of heather tied with a knot of red, white and blue ribbon, were presented to all residents having lived in the district for 40 years or more. Messrs T. Hcnsman, R. ,T. Law. R. L. Tippler, R. Hayes and Mrs F. Jamieson, senr., gave talks on the early days. Mr Law made special reference to the earliest pioneers and suggested that this gathering, as the first early settlers’ reunion in the district, might fittingly pay' tribute to those who had passed on. All stood in silence for a few moments. Items wore contributed as follow: —Women’s Institute, song and tableau. Miss Aim (New Zealand), Mis s Burling (England), Miss R. Easton (Scotland), Miss Nancy Easton (Wales), Miss Barber (Canada), Mrs Stern (Africa), Mrs 11. Easton (India) ; Mrs C. M. Cronquest, vocal solos; Mr R. Ilaycs, humorous song in character; Mr F. Thurston, sleight of hand display; Mrs T. Honsinan and Phyllis Clough, recitations; Jean Clough, tap dancing. Supper was served by institute members, and all were asked to accept a piece of the president’s birthday calm, which was decorated as an early Victorian lady. At the close Mr J. T. Bovis, who had charge, of the programme, conveyed thanks to all who had placed their cars at the disposal of the committee, and who had contributed. Mr R. L. Tippler, on behalf of the early settlers, expressed appreciation of the arrange rnents and congratulated Mrs C. Easton on being the recipient of a Coronation Medal. The singing of “Abide With Dio,” “Aukl Lang Syne,” and “God Save the King,” closed a" most successful evening. Apologies for absence were received frcni Dir and Mrs S. W. Carter, Dir R. Waring-,Taylor, Mrs R. Tippler, Mr and Mrs Piggott, and Mr and Dlrs C. Vaughan, At the Borough Council meeting on Tuesday evening, Dir C. L. Hunter, Df.P., wrote that lie had forwarded the council’s application for the erection of ten houses under the Government housing scheme to the DJinistcr in charge of the department. A contract for the supply and spreading of 400 yards of metal at 7s per yard was ac eepted. It was resolved to have the regula tions under the Health Act governing hairdressers’ premises made applicable to the borough. The Dlain Highways Board is to he communicated with regarding the sealing of intersections on tlio State main highways in the borough. Attention is to be given Vance Street footpaths. The maintenance estimates of the main highways were approved and arc to be forwarded to the Public Works Department. Dlrs Butler, who lias been the organist in Sr. Joseph’s Roman Catholic Church for the past 25 years and has relinquished the posilion through indifferent health, was tendered a social evening by church members this week. Progressive euchre was played, the winners being Miss Murrow and Mr T. DJoynihan. Items were contributed by Dlisses Smith (Dfoutca), duets; Mrs S. Barber, Dir E. Dfain. and Mr A. Judd, songs; and Dir F. Thurston, conjuring tricks. Mr W. Moynihan presented the guest, with a handsome handbag and cheque, making reference to her many activities in connietion with the church, not only as organist, hut also at all social functiions. Dlrs Butler feelingly replied.
