HOCKEY

COMPETITION CONTINUED. MATCHES IN THE RAIN. Conditions could hardly have been more unpleasant than on Saturday afternoon for the continuation of the matches in the Manawatu Hockey Association’s senior and junior competitions. Passing rain and hail showers were distinctly unhelpful to the players, but in most cases the latter reacted to the first real dose of winter weather very well and defied bad conditions underfoot by bright displays. There was only a meagre collection of spectators' at the Hokowliitu Domain, but those ,who attended were' treated to entertaining hockey. The matches resulted as follow : SENIOR. Broadway A G v. Massey College 1. Phoenix' 5 v. Broadway B 0. JUNIOR. Massey College 7 v. Phoenix 4. Broadway 3 v. Combined Services 2. In the senior grade Central Old Boys had the bye. BROADWAY A’S SUCCESS. The result of the Broadway A-Mas-sey College game was never in doubt, the experience and cohesion of the winners standing them in good stead, particularly in the earlier stages of the game, College coming to light more attractively towards the finish. The surface cut up badly alter the change over, and this did not aid the backs in stemming the sparkling forward work of the Broadway pack, who were, however, inclined to be overanxious, spoiling several otherwise fine movements by off-side play. At halltime the score was 2—o, D. Hoare and Scales having scored. On the resumption Broadway secured a 4—o lead when Scales scored again and O’Brien also found the net. Massey College displayed tenacity, even if it was more individual than collective, and Hopewell got through to net a smart goal. A few minutes later Ward came to light for Broadway and the game ended with the score unchanged after a fast display. Messrs D. Wilton and M. Levy refereed. WIN FOR PHOENIX.

In the other senior encounter tne result was likewise a foregone conclusion, as Phoenix rattled on goals, but it was no disgrace for Broadway B, who were a far less experienced side and in field work really held their own v’th the winners._ They just lacked the quality of being able to finish off their forward movements, and to succeed in the finer points which would have meant so much. At half-time the score was only I—o, Lofts having scored, and the tally at that stage was a fair indication of the relative merits of the teams. In the second spell the stamina of the more hardened players was very evident in comparison with the keenness. The Phoenix scores marked the undoubted superiority of the side. Lofts netted again . and Morgan goaled twice and Turner once. Messrs R. L. C. Aitchison and L. Martin refereed. ■ THE JUNIOR MATCHES.

There was little between Broadway juniors and Combined Services, and the former’s win by three goals to two fairly indicates the even matching. It was a good, even game with' Broadway displaying superior combination —the factor that ensured their success. O’Connell, Hincks,_ and Richards netted lor the winners, and Leader and Byers for Combined' Services, in whose side they were among the more outstanding players. Messrs V. Turner and W. Inkpen : were the referees. . Massey College attached a good deal of significance to their win against Phoenix by 7 goals to 4, for it was their first success for a week or two, and the encouragement derived will doubtless stimulate the side to greater efforts. At half-time the score in a rather scratchy display was 4—2, and College, who were playing on their own ground held their lead with little difficulty. Their scores came from Lynch (3), Thompson (2), Gilmer, and Sill, and a little more passing, which was considerably restricted, would doubtless have improved the position even more. The referee were Messrs W. Sutton and Smith.

LADIES’ COMPETITION. The ladies’ competition matches were played on Takaro Park under conditions as trying as those under which the men played, but nevertheless entertaining displays were produced. Kauwhata beat Public Service by < goals to nil, the scorers being Misses M. Young (2), D. Simeon (2), M. Salt, K. Lyons, and Iv. Lawton. Awahuri won bv 4 goals to nil against Knitting Mills, Misses M. Bottcher and 11. “Picholes .obtaining 2 goals each. Broadway secured a narrow win against H.S.O.G. by 2 goals to 1 ; scorers for the winners were Misses H. Griffin and M. Bottcher and for the losers Miss D. Carlson netted. Mr W. Lundy refereed the first and last of the above matches and Air N. Hansen the second one.
