A WINTER AT THE POLE
RUSSIANS’ PLANS. Received June 7. 9.40 a.m. MOSCOW, June. 6. Four ’planes have left tho North Pole station for tho expedition’s base at Rudolf Island, 550 miles away, leaving behind on the icefloe near the Pole four men, who will remain throughout the winter making meteorological and other observations. Three of the machines were flown by Pilots Mazuruk, Vodopianov and Alilokov, with Dr Schmidt, the leader of the expedition, aboard. One arrived at Rudolf Island five and a half hours later and a fourth, piloted by At. Alexeyev, landed cm the ice at latitude 85 degrees owing to a shortage of petrol, which will be flown to him from Rudolf Island. An earlier cable appears on page 7.
