MILK IN SCHOOLS.
MEETING OF COMMITTEE
The executive appointed some weeks ago to consider the Government’s offer to provide milk for school children met in the Borough Council Chambers last evening. Mr T. Collins (Mayor) presided and there were also present: Mrs T. Donaldson, Messrs E. A. Palmer, C. V. Jewell, G. J. Fitzpatrick, W. H. Smith, F. Gaze, C. B. McClure, and E. Petty (secretary). Apologies for absence were received from Mrs S. AlcDowall and Mr H. L. Simson. The chairman reported that none of the local milk vendors nor the Cheltenham Dairy Company were prepared to undertake the supply of pasteurised milk to the schools. A letter was read from Dr. Watt (Director-General of Health) statingthat it was proposed to establish a central supply at Palmerston North, and Feilding might be linked up with that scheme. Mr McClure read from a letter which Mr L. J. Wild had sent to Dr. Watt, suggesting that refrigerated milk might take the place of pasteurised milk in order that the Agricultural High School might undertake the supply. Dr. Watt’s reply to this letter was to the effect that the department was not prepared to relax the conditions necessitating tlie pasteurisation of the milk. The secretary stated that he had been informed that the scheme was in operation in Wanganui and that the supplier of the milk had established a pasteurising plant which had cost £ISOO. A further letter from Dr. Watt stated that Mr Cowl, representing the department, would visit the district in the near future, and would give further information on the matter.
The chairman said lie was sure the schools surrounding Feilding would wish to link up with a Feilding scheme, so that this committee should endeavour to have its own scheme rather than become part of a Palmerston North one.
The meeting passed a resolution nsk-
ing the department to further consider the advisability of assisting the Agricultural High School to install the necessary plant to provide the milk supply and adjourned to await instructions regarding the (J a t e °f the visit of Air Cowl.
