THE GOLD STANDARD.
RETURN NOT CONTEMPLATED
(British Official Wireless.) Received June 4, 12.30 p.m. RUGBY, June 3. In the House of Commons the Chancellor (Sir John Simon) was asked to give the same assurance as was given by his predecessor that the country would not return to the gold standard until he was satisfied that the causes which had brought about the downfall of the gold standard in 1931 had been removed and were not likely to recur. Sir John Simon replied that the conditions necessary before the return to the gold standard would be possible had. been clearly indicated in previous declarations, which continued to represent the policy of the Government on that subject. HOARDERS ALARMED. Received June 4, 12.20' p.m. LONDON, June 3. The largest amount of gold ever / offered in a single day was bought bv the Equalisation Fund for £2,565,000. It is believed that a large part emanated from • reign hoarders, who are alarmed at tne continued rumours of a gold price decline.
