MEETING AT ELLERSLIE.

GREAT NORTHERN HURDLES. CORNWALL HANDICAP FIELD. T’lio Auckland Racing Club’s winter mooting, with the principal features tho Great Northern Hurdles on tho first day, and the Groat Northern Steeplechase on tho second day, some horses claiming dual engagements in those ovents, .will open at Ellcrslio to-morrow. It has attracted the best jumpers in the country. Manawatu horses engaged to-morrow are Pango, topweight in tho Greenlano Steeplechase, and Tangled, in the Hunt Club Hurdles. Forest Glow will race in tho Groat Northern Stoeplechaso on Wednesday. Jolly Beggar, who carried 12.4 into second place in the Waikato Hurdles at To Rapa, will, if ho wins, have carried to success the highest weight (11.13) since tho distance in tho Great Northern Hurdles was increased to 2j miles, but is a very fit horso and should bo hard to boat. Erination, who accounted for the Brighton Hurdles at the last Auckland meeting, will bo improved, like Sandy Dix, a Te Aroha winner, by his outing' at To Rapa. Royal Limond, who finished third at Ellerslie last year, is very well. Prince of Orango rather luckily won tho race a year ago when Clarion Call lost his rider. High Quality has raced consistently, and was third in tho Coronation Hurdles at To Rapa. Roxy won a steeplechase at Pukekohe. is a good jumper, and has pace. Modern Maid showed up prominently for most of the distance in the hurdles on tho second day at Waikato. Though he disappointed at To Rapa, Tout le Monde, a winner at Egmont and a good stayer on the flat, lias his admirers. Black Marlin, after his stoeplechaso success at Waikato, appeals greatly oh the minimum, but is reported to havo injured himself on Tuesday. He won the Trentham Hurdles last year and was then second in tho Winter Hurdles. Freo Air was placed at To Rapa and may go well. Valpecn looks an improved horso after his second in the Waikato Steeplechase, and Lord Val, winner of the Waikato Hurdles, is a likoly favourite. Ho has only to stay on to bo in a place. THE BIG FLAT RACE.

There is strong class represented in the Cornwall Handicap, the chief flat event at tho meeting, but 11. Rama’s good pair, Tooley Street and Horowhenuu, are likely to claim favouritism. Tooley Street won the Easter Handicap at Ellerslic (one mile) and then scored at Whangarei over li miles, the Cornwall Cup distance. Horowhcnua ran good races at Pukekohe and To Rapa, being unlucky at the Wnikato meeting. King Rey carried 9.1 into second place over I-4 miles at To Rapa, where Scotland, who can handlo any going, went a fair race. Gay Rose has gone up a stone in the weights for her dual Waikato success, but has only 21b more now than what she carried to victory in the Te Rapa Handicap. Royal Appellant and Grateful have done nothing for some time, while tho form of Knight oE Australia was disappointing at Pukekohe. Do Friend is a distinct lightweight possibility after his To Rapa success, as is Te Ilai, while Dark Shadow and Jewelled Girdle should not be without chances. Horses likely to run well at the meeting are: Greenlane Steeplechase.—Pango, Saint Musk, Lucidus. Jervois Handicap..—Gay Rebel, Black Musk, Small Boy. Penrose Hurdles. —Collision, High Star, Spearcourt. Great Northern Hurdles.—Jolly Beggar, Lord Val, High Quality. Cornwall Handicap.—lloroyhenua, Gay Rose, Te Ilai. Hunt Club Hurdles. —All Irish, Tangled, Rozol.

Members’ Handicap.—Peter Beckford, Kiitowyn, Surella.
