WANGANUI MEETING.

FIRST DAY TO-MORROW. REVIEW OF FIELDS. ( (By “Spectator.”) The Wanganui Jockey Club’s winter meeting opens to-morrow. Big fields are cardod, and high-class horses will be racing. Particular interest will attach to the well-endowed jumping events, the Puruft Hack Hurdles, Century Hurdles and Grandstand Steeplechase, tho quality of tho fields in which has more than justified the progressive policy adopted by tho club in the allotment of increased stake money. There will be single-pool betting, with a dividend indicator, and tho car-parking facilities liavo been greatly improved, the space available being increased threefold. It is expected that tho meeting will be one of the best patronised for years. A brief roviow of the fields is as follows : 12.0 PURUA HACK HURDLES, of £l5O. One mile, four furlongs and a quarter. Red Manfred 11 0 Red Ruins 9 8 Hunting Petrarch 9 2 Queen 10 8 Kentucky Song 9 0 Ethiop 10 0 Red Manfrod, after bis impressive win at Foxton in his debut as a hurdler, stands out, despite his increased weight. Hunting Queen has not raced up to expectations of late, but Ethiop was finishing on belter than formerly at Foxton, where ho filled second place. Red Rufus was not prominent at the fixture, but Petrarch, who won tho steeplechase, now returns to hurdle company, nnd should go well. Kentucky Song showed some form at Woodville, and may surprise backers. Tho public will probably favour:

Red Manfred, Petrarch, Ethiop. 12.40

Four good class sprinters head tho weights in this event. Ben Braggio has not raced since ho won at tho Manawatu meeting, but fully deserves the honour of topweight. Notium, third at Egmorit, appears to be well forward, and Gold Mission, after being badly placed in the straight, finished fast into third place in tho Kebhell Memorial at Foxton. Tonnorre is a brilliant beginner, and likes a turning course. Both Solaria and Hunting Lodge have been disappointing of late The favoured trio may be: Ben Braggie, Tonncrre, Gold Mission. 1.20

CENTURY HURDLES, of £350. Two miles and 194 yards.

Clarion Call, second in tho hurdle race on tho first day at Egniont,, has been withdrawn from his northern engagements to compete here. Kuaform won the event last' year and, though a good jumper, does not appear to be quite forward enough. The prospects of tho improving Joumet, who was placed at Hastings, look good. Brigadore will need to improve, and Contact, Beau Gallante, and John Charles will require to make a better showing than at Foxton. Contact appears to be the most likely of the trio. Sporting Song, second in tho event last year, should go well after his recent three firsts and a second in hack steeplechase company. Tho public choice may bo for: Clurion Call, Journet, Sporting Song. 2.0 BALGOWNIE HACK HANDICAP, of £175. One mile and 110 yards.

Dictate, a recent winner in the south, is on equal terms with that good finisher, Brazen King. Myriam has been very consistent in her racing since the Manawatu meeting, and Airing may improve upon his second at Foxton. Provided lie gets away with the field Tho Sandwich Man should be in the finish. Eara was third at Foxton and Maahanui and Galteemore should go well. Naughty Marietta is at home over this distance. The fancied runners may be: Myriam. Airing, The Sandwich Man. 2.40

GRANDSTAND STEEPLECHASE, of

The Australian ’chaser, Bonnie Rollox, who knocked a fence on the first day at Egmont and did not start on the second day, will here be given a chance to show his worth. Started here in preference to the hurdles. Sporting Song may find some of the company too strong. Fourth in the Adamson Steeplechase at Egmont,* Riotous is now well forward, and should give a good account of himself. Royal Banquet, who went a fine race in the Foxton’ Cup, should stay if he jumps confidently. Though a beginner, Platter appeals on the minimum after his good display at Foxton. Most support may be forthcoming for: Riotous, Bonnie Rollox, Royal Banquet. 3.20

EMPIRE HANDICAP, ot £250. One mile and a distance.

Friesland is carrying a big weight, 4iut has been racing brilliantly. Pukeko was third in the Foxton Cup, but Taitoru, Tiger Gain and Red Manfred, who is a very fit horse, should run good races, especially tho latter, if reserved for this event. Mandamus is an unlucky runner, and International should not be far away at the finish. Reinar and Royal Banquet (if started) appeal best of the lightweights, Rcipar won easily in bis first start in open company at Foxton. The favourites may be:

International. Rcipar, Friesland 4.5

Dictate lias a dual engagement. Flying Chief is a hack of great promise, and skittled the opposition on the first day at Egmont. Taro has recent winning form, and Airing, if started, will be hard. AVinfomo Lu wns a winner at Egmont, and Dawning Dight will he improved by her outing at Foxton. To Huia won the Coronation Stakes at Egmont and, though disappointing at To Rapa, should be prominent. The public may olcct to support: Flying Chief, To Huia, Taro.

Dictate Comes North. Dictate was shipped north in charge of A. McAulay from Christchurch on Wed; nesday, and will bo racing at Wanganui to-morrow, when ho will probably be ridden by L. G. Morris. On Tuesday lie was sprinted with Swordstick over three furlongs, and is in excellent older.
