HOCKEY.
A sterling performance was registered by the Phoenix senior A five-a-side hockey team when they journeyed to Feilding a few days ago to Compete in the Coronation tourney adjourned from Coronation Day. When play ceased on that day there were but three teams left, Wanderers A and B, of Feilding, and Phoenix, Palmerston North. The senii-fliial saw Phoenix .and Wanderers B drawn to play. On Saturday, the semi-final game resulted, Phoenix 2, Wanderers 13 0. Taking the field almost immediately, the winners met Wanderers A in the filial. In the first spell Phoenix, with J. Morgan , and P. Lofts prominent, attached strongly and, although the Wanderers’ defence was splendid, a perfect centre by Morgan was very smartly deflected into the net by Lotts. The other goal was the result of a fine individual effort by Morgan. Securing the ball at half-way lie very cleverly worked j through the opposition to score handily. The second spell saw the Feilding team come into the picture, and when their backs cleared, A. Packer raced away to score a splendid goal. Although Wanderers attacked strongly, the defence held, and the final whistle found Phoenix the winners 2—l. , The Palmerston North men are deserving of commendation for their display. In the backs, J. Sutton played faultlessly, his clearing of -the ball being particularly good. K. Burne was very little inferior, defending very soundly. W. 'Burne, the half-back, showed to advantage, especially on attack. He combined exceptionally well with his forwards. J. Morgan was outstanding and his combination with Lofts was really a treat to watch. These two players appear well up to representative standard'. The tournament was a success in every way and reflects great credit on the Feilding Hockey Association.®
