VATICAN’S ANSWER.
UNSATISFACTORY TO GERMANY. BERLIN, May 31. Germany has notified the Vatican that- the answer by Cardinal Pacelli, Secretary of State to the Holy See, to protests against the recent speech by the Archbishop of Chicago, Cardinal Mundelein, is unsatisfactory.
The German Embassy in Washington recently made informal representations to the State. Department about the criticisms of Herr Hitler and his policy toward the Roman Catholic Church made by Cardinal Mundelein. The Cardinal had asked how a nation of 60,000,000 intelligent people could submit in fear and servitude to an alien Austrian paperhangcr and a lew associates like l)r. Goebbels duel Genoral Gocring. The Cardinal intimated that the charges against nuns and monks were made simply for propaganda purposes. The Vatican, in reply, pointed out that it could not he held responsible for the personal views of individual Cardinals and directed attention to the fact that the German Government permitted Press attacks on the Pope.
