FOXTON.
(From Our Own Correspondent.) FOXTON, May 31. Held under the auspices of tho Mann■vyatu Rowing Club a dance took place on Saturday evening- An exhibition of tap dancing was giveii by Mr W. Mattar, of; Taumaranui, and vocal items by Miss LEllers. Mrs M. E. Perrcau was hostess at an afternoon held to augment the funds of the Foxton Golf Club, at her residence. Lady’s Mile. Miss B. Sutherland and Mrs Nocklcs won prizes. At the usual fortnightly meeting of the Druids’ Lodge, presided over by Bro. i. Fuller, a motion of sympathy was passed with the relatives of tho late Bro. Shortt. An invitation was received inviting members to attend the installation ceremony at Oroua Lodge. Nominations received for tho election of officers are:—A.D., Sis. Titcoinbo; 0.G., Bro. A. Thomson; A.D.B.’s Bro. and Sis. Wilson; V.A.B. s, Bro. and Sis. Swan. , Miss O. Frascc, who recently tcndcrecl her resignation from the clerical staff of a local firm to accept a position with the Foxton Borough Council, was the recipient of a presentation from her former fellow workers. , At the annual mooting of the Foxton Chamber of Commerce, presided over by Mr C. R. Tutty (president), Ml' C. L. Hunter, M.P., was also in attendance. The chairman, giving a resume of tho year’s activities, said tho chamber had chiefly agitated for tho inauguration of a housing scheme, tho sealing of tho Foxton Beach highway, a rail car service, and tho completion T>E tho Levin-Greatford railway during the year. The following officers were elected: —President, Mr A. Alsop; vice-president, Mr E. Tilcombe; secretary, Mr R. 0. Ilornblow; assistant secretary, Mr 11. D. Dawson; auditor, Mr E. W. Thane. Tho chief business before the meeting was a discussion on the absorption of Foxton’s unemployed. Unfortunately a large number of men will bo thrown out of employment within a very short time owing to roading works ceasing and it is imperative that reproductive works bo found for them as soon as possible, said the president. At the request of the Chamber Mr Hunter agreed to take up tho matter of planting the railway reserves where such work had not been undertaken with the Minister, and also to arrange for the cleaning up of tho planted areas as unemplayment jobs and to co-oporato with tho Foxton Harbour Board in furthering tree planting at .Manawatu Heads. He also agreed to investigate further the FoxtonBeach highway question.
