TE ARAKURA.

(From Our Ow, Correspondent.) XE ARAIvUARA, May 31. On Friday afternoon a pleasant function was held in the local hall. Mx J. J. Hume, chairman of the School Committee stated that it was with great regret that they were unable to hold then annual school picnic this year; it was the first time since the formation of llio school that this event bad had to be cance led. The committee and teachers had done their utmost to abide by the wishes of the health officials. Mr Ilunio made mention of tho fact that ex-pupils were present who now had children of. their own attending the local school receiving their prizes and also that an ox-pupil was now a member of the School Committee 'J'lioro was a gentleman (Mr P. Hansen) present, who had boon connected with tho School since its formation 25 years ; ago, and had always taken tho keenest interest in the school. Ho was looked upon by the residents as the futhei °I school. Mr Ilanscn presented tho children with their prizes, thanking Mr Hume for his kind remarks and stating that it was a pleasant surprise. Special prizes were wofi by the following: Sowing prize, Stds. V and YI, Paulino O’Regan, donated bv Mrs P. Hansen; Nola Humo 2, donated by Mrs W. E. Thomas. Stds. 11l and IV, Audrey Firth 1, Norah O Farrell 2 Stds. I mid 11, Ngaire _ &nfhn 1, Nancy O’Regan 2. Special prizes donated bv Miss W. Bailey (head teacher): Mangold growing, Mnisio Johnston; drawing, Ronald Hume; neat books, Pauline o’Regan and Dulcie Cleaver. Mr U. Thomas (Palmerston North) donated prizes for tile best behaviour, these being won by Dorothy Goodman and Beauty TeOka. Dux of the school, Vera Knight, prize donated by Mr G. H. JJennett (Palmerston North). Mrs A. Goodman’s special prizes for writing were won by Rawa Lawton and Roydon Griffin. Special prizes won in the Calf Club competitions were awarded to Olive Thomas for the best two-year-old heifer, donated by Mr J. R. Stewart; yearlings, class 1, Joyce Goodman, donated by Mr W. E. Thomas; class

Air Hansen called upon the children to give three cheers for their parents, who had provided funds to buy their books, aslo all who had donated special prizes. Miss Bailey (head teacher) later presented Mr llan6cn with the complete roll and school jubilee autograph book. Air Hume called upon the scholars for- cheers for Air Hansen and extended thanks to the ladies who had provided the afternoon tea. ThrOo cheers were accorded the teachers, Aliss Bailey and'Airs Packwood. During the afternoon games were held in the hall under the supervision of tho teachers, relay races being won by Geranium Te Oka, Nancy Dixon, Reggie Graham. Millie Te Oka and Kevin Barnes. Alueical circles were won by Pat Dixon.
