KING’S BIRTHDAY.
HOLIDAY OBSERVANCE,
In a statement regarding the King’s Birtnday holiday the Minister of Labour says:—“ln the Now Zealand Gazette ol April 15, 1937, an announcement was made by the Minister of Internal Affairs that the birthday 'of liis Majesty King George VI will be observed on June 9 instead of the actual date, December 14, following similar arrangements made in Great Britain. The Factories Act, 1921-22, and the majority of the awards and agreements made under the Industrial Conciliation and Arbitration Act, 1925, and agreements under the Labour Disputes Investigation Act, 1913, provide for the observance of a holiday on the King’s Birthday. “L think it desirable, therefore, to point out for the information of employers that the Government proposes to introduce next session legislation to give effect to the change in. the date of observance of the King’s Birthday. Where, therefore, employers are required by the Factories Act or by an award or agreement to allow Jdieir employees a holiday on the King’s Birthday they should allow such holiday on June 9. Failure to allow a holiday on this day will, when the necessary legislation has been enacted, render employers liable to pay the special rates prescribed by the Act, award, or agreement to all employees who worked on that day.
“Among other things that weighed with the Government in following the lines adopted in Great Britain this year was the inconvenience that would be caused to the business community by the observance of a holiday on December 14.”
