DAVIS CUP DOUBLES.
DEFEAT OF AUSTRALIANS. Received Alay 31, 11.15 a.m. FOREST HILLS, Alay 30. In the doubles of the Davis Cup match between America (Budge and Alako) and Australia (Crawford and AlcGrath), which the Americans won, Budge’s service held until AlcGrath dropped his sixth and the score was even. The. play was crisp and speedy, both teams engaging in short, sharp volleying contests m the middle of the court. Crawford then dropped his service, double-faulting and netting, giving the Americans a 5-—3 lead. Crawford then steadied and, with McGrath’s brilliant angling, the Australians broke Budge’s service and then evened the score at 5—5, but the Americans won the' next game for a 6—5 lead. The Americans were twice set point before j they clinched the vital twelfth. The Americans quickly assumed a runaway lead of 3—o in the next set. crashing their way through their opponents with dashing net play. CrawIforcl won his service in the fourth and it momentarily appeared as if the Australians had halted their opponents, but the Americans took the remainder jof the games with ease. In the third set the games at the : beginning alternated with the service. .AlcGrath’s delivery endangered the ! seventh, when Crawford’s volleys lacked , length, but the Australians recouped it in the longest deuced game thus far. The break came in the ninth when Crawford lost the service and the Ahie--1 ricans assumed a 5—4 lead. | A gallery of 5000 cheered lustily when I the Australians retrieved to lead 6—5. ' They were twice set-point. This was ’ a vital juncture, but the Americans’ | perfect lobbing enabled them to regain the lead and win the set. Alako, unlike last year,- proved- a most formidable obstacle and had an aggressive attack. Air C. E.
