CORRESPONDENCE
(To the Editor.) Sir, —Yesterday, lor many people was a day given over to the Government entirely. The Chinese have an annual settlement day and some humorist in New Zealand has copied their example. Having registered my car and procured my driver’s license, interviewed my banker for the amount of interest collected, did likewise at the Post Office Savings Bank, and ascertained the total wages 1 received from the boss, 1 set out to lill in my income tax return and land tax returns (overdue). Purchased a large envelope and more Government stamps and sent 1 them away. Paid the five shillings dole and procured a form at the Post Office, and filled in the information for the Government officials of income other than salary and wages; and waited in the queue lor an overworked official to assess the damages with all and sundry looking on. 1 paid this with State issued paper money. After lunch 1 paid my sou’s levy lor King George V Fund at High School, did likewise for myself to the Mayor’s Fund, and then had time to struggle with some rusty holts and nuts and change the number plates on the car. Sallied forth with the old plates tied over the new with stout string, and met a traffic cop, produced my 2s Gil warrant of fitness (for the car) and received a nice reel sticker with a crown on it. Was tickled to death to get a full crown for half a crown. Sent a cheque for life insurance premium, and paid the Government telephone toll In the evening I'tuned in on the State radio (doleful dirges in keeping with the day) and wondered il 1 hail forgotten anything, until the wife reminded me of the radio license! So I tuned into a B station until they put on the number “It’s Blooming Well Grand to be Dead.” Having copied the Chinese for our day of settlement on May 31, and as the heads are looking for a day to celebrate the King’s Birthday, why not May 31, when all the harassed public would be free to settle up?—l am, etc., STUMPED.
