A term of one year e detention for relormative treatment was imposed. For accused, Mr G. GToosley said prisoner was 23 years of age and, except for an offence tor which he had been sentenced last week, had a clean record, ’the offence for which ho had been sentenced was an old cue and was not of a serious nature. Prisoner had not had any of the advantages of health, environment or education. At the ago of 13 he had left school and tor six years had been employed in Wellington. He had left that indoor employment, on'medical advice, and had come to Palmerston North to relatives. That had been at the breaking of the depression and he had found it impossible to find the type of employment which suited him. Domestic circumstances at home had made it impossible for him to return there, and he had drawn sustenance and had spent some time in unemployment camps. Latterly he had goue to Foxton, working on the whart and in the Cliinece gardens in off periods, earning a small and precarious income. Unfortunately, he had then committed the offence. Counsel asked the Court to grant the prisoner what leniency it could. Mr H. R. Cooper, the Crown prosecutor, said that accused had been associated with Maoris and Chinese, and His Honour remarked that the report of the probation officer was not satisfactory. Mr Crossley explained that through certain circumstances he had been unable to read the report. The Judge said that he would have to punish prisoner; it seemed that prisoner was getting out of hand and needed discipline. It was unfortunate that he was too old to be sent to a. Borstal institution, but lie would be sentenced to reformative detention for 12 months.
