GAOL SENTENCE.

FORMER OFFICIAL. SYDNEY, April 9. Sydney Aubrey Haddocks, aged 56, formerly Government Road Transport Commissioner, who was suspended from duty on March 2 and charged with a serious offence, w;i6 to-day convicted and sentenced to 18 months imprisonment. In a dramatic statement irom the dock, Haddocks said that some time ago his official duties had Iri'como so wearying that he had felt he was bordering on a complete breakdown. He tried drinking heavily, without getting relief. A youth whom he had been trying to help had quietly planned his destruction, he declared. He denied that there had been any association between the youth and himself. Tho youth, in evidence, admitted having ‘been deported from New Zealand.
