MANAWATU CLUB’S FIXTURE. PLAY IN CHAMPIONSHIP. Though conditions had appeared to be quite favourable in the morning, a strong easterly breeze sprang up early on Saturday afternoon to make playing conditions a little difficult in the Manawatu Golf Club’s Easter tournament, on the Hokowhitu links. The New Zealand amateur champion, J. P. Hornabrook. headed the aggregate scores for the two qualifying rounds, closely followed by two former holders, of the title, T. H. Horton and A. D. S. Duncan. The 16 who qualified for the championship were:

Twenty-one teams took part in the teams match, played in conjunction with the second qualifying round. The best score was a net 306 by August, Kennedy, Bryden and Cooper followed by a net 309 by Chapman, Glendinning, Williams and Wimsett. STROKE HANDICAP. The A grade division of the second stroke handicap was won by E. Fletcher, who returned a net 72, while R. J. Fisher had a net 73. H. J. Craighead headed the B grade with a net 70, and E. J. August had a net 71. ~ BOGEY COMPETITIONS. The morning bogey was won in the A grade by J. F. Field (1 up), with R. Stevenson (2 up) winner of the B grade. COMMENT ON PLAY. Improving considerably on his morning round of 81, A. D. S. Duncan was round in 74 in the afternoon (36 out and 38 in). Features of his plav were twos at the 9th and 12th. ' Hornabrook bad a card of 77 in the afternoon, two strokes more than for his morning round. Playing consistently, Horton did a nice 76 in the afternoon. K. Glendinning, after handing in the best morning card of 75, did rather badly in the afternoon, when h© required 83. One hole cost him eight strokes. O. H. Williams played very steadily for cards of 79 and 81.

A feature of yesterday’s play was the defeat of Duncan by Adamson Hokitika). Duncan led 1 up to the fourth, where Adamson squared. Then the latter forged ahead to be two tip at tlie turn. The 30th was squared and Adamson went further ahead at Land’s End which he took in four. Duncan took the 15th 4—5 reducing Adamson’s lead a point. The 16th was halved in fours and Duncan took the 17th 5 —6 to leave Adamson 1 lip. All depended now on the last green which was halved in fours, giving the match to Adamson.

After Williams had squared his match with Glendinning at the third, the pair halved the next four in succession. Williams captured both the eighth and ninth. Despite the fact that he had to get out of a bunker at Monro’s, he took the bole, 3—4. At Eden he was on the green from the tee. Tile 10th was halved in fives. Williams conceded Land’s End to lower his advantage to I up. All [the remaining holes were halved.
