SOUTH AFRICA.
TO BE DEFENDED BY BRITISH PLANES. During the next few years the Union of South Africa Department of Defence will concentrate on the training of 3000 aircraft mechanics and 1000 pilots. Under an extremely advantageous arrangement in Great Britain, defence aircraft with henceforth be procured from that country instead of being constructed in South Africa. Air O. Pirow, Alinister of Defence, has announced that during his recent visit to England he came to an agreement with the British authorities whereby aircraft for defence purposes would be made available to the Union at a little more than nominal cost. This would effect a large saving in respect of aircraft construction in South Africa and enable the Defence Department to concentrate on the training of pilots and mechanics.
