FIVE HUNDRED POUNDS
FINE AT WANGANUI. Per Press Association. WANGANUI, Feb. 22. In the Supreme Court to-day Mr Justice Smith fined Paul Nodwell, single, aged 57, who had been found guilty of arson, £SOO and ordered that such sum bo paid within two days or he would be detained in prison for a period not exceeding two years. His Honour said prisoner was guilty ot a cold/ calculated, selfish crime. He hoped to gain a perfectly new house and had endangered the lives ot his neighbours. Apparently a grasp tor money had been his aim in life and the Court proposed to make him feel the effect of his crime through his purse and to show that arson was not a crime to be treated lightly.
