BEST TEN

BATTING AND BOWLING. FIGURES FROM SHIELD GAMES. As a result of tlie five Plunket Shield matches completed to date, two of the leading New Zealand batsmen have averages of over 100 and four others have averages of over 70. Writes “Polity” in the Auckland Star. The men at the top are W. N. Garson, Auckland, with a total of 500 for four completed innings, average 125; and A. W. Roberts, Canterbury, with a total of 120, but an average also of 120, as two of his three innings saw him not out. Mervyn Wallace, the young Aucklander, has put on 279 runs for an average of 93. The two Canterbury men, Hadlee and Page, are also well up in the first ten. Of the bowlers, J. Cowie, Auckland, has easily been the most successful, with nineteen wickets for 240 runs, average 12.63. Silver (Otago). Vivian (Auckland), Gallichan (Wellington) and Parsloe (Wellington) have all taken ten each.

Of course, one match is now being completed, Canterbury v. Otago. The following are the averages for the best ten, in batting and in bowling, up to the commencement of the current match:

(A. represents Auckland, W. Wellington, C. Canterbury, O. Otago.) MANY CALLED—FEW CHOSEN. Meantime the eight batsmen for England have already been chosen—-M. L. Page, J. L. Kerr, W. A. Hadlee, A. W. Roberts (Canterbury); W. N. Carson, W. M. Wallace H G. Vivian (Auckland); and D. A. R. Moloney (Wellington). . . The ages, last birthday, of the eight “certanties” are: —Page 34, Kerr 26, Haillee 24, Roberts 28, Carsdn 20,* ■Wallace 20, Vivian 24, Moloney 26. With only 14 players to go Home ordinarily the remaining six would comprise four howlers and two ’keepers. But there is some doubt about the position of T. Lowry (aged 39 on February 17) and the general belief is that lie will play when required, and as he was an excellent wicketkeeper it would appear that L. W. Tindill, aged 26 (Wellington) will be the only selection for tho position. Four more stock bowlers, even after allowing for Roberts (medium) and Vivian (slow), are required. I hey seem likely to come from Fast.—J. Cowie, aged 24 (Auckland); C. K. Parsloe, a fine batsman, aged 26 (Wellington); and R. Silver, aged 27 (Otago). Medium.—E. Mulcock, aged 27 (Canterbury, swerver). Slow—N. Galhchan, aged 29 (Manawatu); B. Griffiths, aged 26 (■Wellington); M. Sharp, agedl 21 (Canterbury); lan Cromb, aged 31 (Canterbury); and L. Groves, aged 25 Provided only one wicketkeeper will be selected it would appear that the remaining place would be filled by a ntilitv nlaver, and those wit-li the best chances ‘are:—A. M. (Auckland), J. R. Lamason (Wellington) and C. J- Elmes, aged 27 ( °Other candidates for wicketkeeper are:—J. A. R. Blandford, aged 23 (Wellington) and C. K. Jackman, aged 31 (Canterbury). , • is the youthful Poverty Bay log-break bowler who made a fine impression in the Country v. Town game at Eden Park a few years ago. He was chosen for the North Island eleven which was beaten bv South at Basin Reserve bv six wicketsc exactly two years ago. He got one for 28 (Cromb.) and one for 47 (Bellamy).
