OBITUARY
MRS JESSIE KNIGHT
There died at her residence, 18 Selwyn Street, Wanganui, on February 18, Mrs Jessie Knight, widow of the late Thomas Knight, of Palmerston North.
Born in Wellington in 1854, Mrs Knight, with her parents, Captain and Mrs Varnham, and other members of the family, occupied a sheep station called “The Tauren,” near Mastertoii, shortly afterward moving to “Papawai,” Grey town. In 1872 Mrs Knight was married at Grey town, where, ns a bride of 18, she went to the Tiraumea run, Mr Knight managing this place for a short term, the property being acquired from the Knight family of Lower Hutt by Mr G. M. Waterhouse, then Premier of New Zealand.
In the year 1875, Mr Knight bought a section of land five miles from Palmerston North on Rangitikei Line. Sixty years ago Palmerston North was in a virgin state and on a section of bush in the vicinity Mr and Mrs Knight set out to make a home, and-reared a family of seven. The farm, known as “Sunny Clearing,” later became one of. the outstanding places of the Manawatu. After the death of her husband seventeen years ago, Mrs Knight resided in Wanganui. She is survived by two sons, two daughters, three grandchildren, and one great-grand-child, also three brothers and one sister.
