OBITUARY.
MR R. H. TALLKE. One of Haleombe’s oldest and most respected settlers, Mr Rudolf Henry Tallke, passed away on February 11 at the residence of his daiightei, Mrs A. Sterne, at the age of 84 years. With his parents Mr Tallke left Germany in April, 1876, to join other settlers who were coining out to New Zealand to settle on the Manchester Block at the township of Halcombe, and after an eventful voyage in the ship Fritz Reuter, of 16 weeks, he armed at the then infant settlement of Feilding. The party was met by the late Mr Halcombe and taken out to the township which was then taking shape under the direction of Mr Halcombe. Here Mr Tallke resided until his death. He was of the pioneering stock who helped to make the roads of the district, and later joined the railway workers when the line was being put through the block. In later years lie took up gardening until old age and infirmity forced him to retire. He was a familiar figure of the township and the family of Tallke was particularly well known, since they were original settlers. Mr Tallke’s wife predeceased him some six years ago and he leaves a family of six daughters, two sons, 35 grandchildren and 24 great grandchildren. The sons are Messrs P. and E. Tallke (Bulls) and the daughters Mesdames E. Aagaard (Stratford), A. Sterne (Halcombe), A. Ivreekher (Halcombe), C. Hughes (Halcombe) and M. Higgins (Greytown). Another daughter, Mrs E. Ellery, of Bulls, died some months ago. The funeral took place on Saturday week and was marked for its many tangible expressions of sympathy for those left to mourn the passing of an honoured pioneer.
