PRIZES AT A DANCE.
PROMOTER FINED. Per Press Association. DUNEDIN, Dec. 9. “It was a purely speculative venture,” stated Mr Bartholomew, S.M., to-day in fining AValter O'Neill £5. Defendant was charged with a breach of tho Gaming Act in promising to dispose of cash orders to the value of £5 by a lottery or chance. The police stated that defendant conducted weekly dances at which Monte Carlo dances were held. Prizes of a small value were first offered, hut now they had increased to the sum mentioned. The dances were well conducted and there was no harm till tho prizes were raised to a high value. Counsel said defendant had been forced to offer high prizes to moot competition, and would welcome tho stopping of the practice.
