PAHIATUA.

PAHIATUA, Dec. 8. The Pahiatua Borough Council held its final meeting for the year on Monday evening. Those present were: 'The Mayor (Mr J. D. Wilson) and Crs. Siddells, Carthew, Hodd, Brown, Judd, Watts, Sturton, Murpliy, and Moriarty. A letter was read from the Transport Department which dealt with speed limits under by-laws and notified that local limits had been superseded

by the 30 miles per hour restriction. The Mayor said that he considered the Transport Department regulation of 30 miles per hour a reasonable one. The Automobile Association made a suggestion regarding the painting of 30 mile speed limit signs at either end

of the town, which was agreed to. The Tararua Electric Power Board, in reply to the council’s request about street illuminations, stated that the time was not yet ripe for special services of a purely local character on a free basis.—Received. A second letter from the same board regarding the minimum charge for the pumping motor, suggesting that the charge of £ls 11s be written off subject to the council entering into an agreement for future supply for the purposes of running the motor, was to hand.—The Mayor suggested that a deputation to the Power Board be appointed, and after a discussion it was decided to send Crs. Siddells and Sturton to wait on

the board and put the matter before them. The New Zealand Defence Office requested the council to take over the lease of tho Drill Hall. Cr Hodd thought it would not be much of an asset to the borough. Cr Sturton agreed and said it would require re- | novating. Cr. Siddells spoke of the insurance in addition to many repairs required to be done. It was decided to notify the department that the council was not prepared to consider taking out a lease of the hall.

A letter was received from a number of ratepayers which stated, inter alia: “We would respectfully ask the council if it will give those who are opposed to the erection of public conveniences in one of the Main Street squares the opportunity to raise the money required to purchase a site in some" other position adjacent to Main Street.” The objections in a petition presented to the Health Department were outlined. In support of the request, tho Mayor said he knew there was a strong feeling in the town among those who were against tlie erection of the building in the town squares. He was also against it and was prepared to donate a substantial

sum himself towards buying a site elsewhere. The Mayor moved that the matter of commencing work on the building be held over for a month to j give those against the Square site an j opportunity of selecting another. Cr. j Hodd then seconded the Mayor’s mo- | tion, and. said lie did not think it j would bo long before the money for the j site was found. The motion was put lu . the meeting and lost. The Mayor called for a division and the voting re- | stilted. —For: The Mayor, Crs. Hodd, Judd and Murphy. Against: Crs. Siddells, Carthew, Sutton, Moriarty, Watts and Brown. It was reported that the Plunket Society was interesting itself in a scheme to induce borough councils to enforce compulsory testing for tuberculosis in cows supplying milk to dairies. The clerk (Mr L. D. Lovelock) said that the Napier Borough Council had a very comprehensive by-law dealing with the question. Cr. Hodd moved that the council fall into line with other councils who had framed by-laws to enforce the provisions mentioned, and was supported in this view by Cr. Carthew. The motion was adopted without dissent and at the next meeting the by-laws committee will table a report on the by-law adopted by tlie Napier Borough Council.
