LORD ISLINGTON

FORMER GOVERNOR’S DEATH. LONDON Dec. 7. The death has occurred of Lord Islington, first baron, who was Governor of New Zealand, 1910-12, at the age of 70. Sixth baronet (Poynder Dickson), he had a military and political career before coining to New Zealand. He was afterwards chairman on a Royal Commission on Indian Public Services, Under-Secretary of State for the Colonies, Parliamentary Under-Secretary for India and chairman of the National Savings Committee. He had no heir. Lord Islington presided at a conference on slum housing held by the Association of Municipal Corporations in London and was then described by a writer as “a picturesque peer who radiates geniality and 16s 6d national savings certificates.”
