CHRISTMAS APPEAL FUND.

(To the Editor.) Sir, —For some years past it has been the practice for the Mayor at this season of the year to make an appeal for funds wherewith to make Christmas a little . more cheerful tor many of our less fortunate citizens and their families. Owing to the many calls that have been made during the past few years, I am diffident about appealing again: in doing so, however, 1 would point out that this fund is not for assisting those registered as unemployed, but more particularly for those who are in straitened circumstances, and are excluded from the unemployed by virtue of their age, or physical disability, many of these being old residents who are now unable to work. Some are, of course, in receipt of the old age pension. Unfortunately, there are many who cannot even qualify for this small allowance. Many of those seeking assistance were able to supplement their pension, or where not entitled to a pension, were able to eke out an existence by an occasional few days’ work ; but owing to the economic conditions this has been denied them in recent years. May I, therefore, appeal to our more fortunate citizens to assist me, and make Christmas of 1936 a little more cheerful for those placed less fortunately than ourselves, many of ' whom have borne the heat and burden of the early pioneering daysi'—Yours faithfully, A. E. MANSFORD, Mayor. MAYOR’S XMAS APPEAL FUND. Mr and Mrs Mansford ... £3 3 0
