BEACH SETTLEMENT

NEW VENTURE PROPOSED. REQUEST FOR ROADING. Proposals for the institution of a new beach settlement, to b.e known as Koputara on the coast between Tangimoana and Foxton, out from Himatangi, were placed before the Dlanawatu County Council, yesterday, when a deputation asked tha.t the council undertake the construction of two a.nd a-half miles of new road to give access to the beach. Those waiting on the council were Messrs R. W. Priest, (who represented the syndicate interested) and 0. J. Dolan, consulting civil engineer. The councillors had before them a plan showing the proposed settlement, near the beach, a.nd it was explained that the distance from Hirnatangi would be less than five miles. Mr Priest said that the proposal was that the construction of the necessary roading from the Himatangi corner should be supervised or undertaken by the council so that the road would conform to the specifications for county roads; also, any application for a subsidy for the. construction of tho road could bo handled by the council. Or. R. A. Wilson asked if a subsidy could be obtained for the work, and Mr Priest said lie had been assured that such a subsidy could be secured. Mr Priest a.sked if the council would undertake the construction of the road if the finance was assured, and the chairman (Cr. W. E. Barber) said he did not think there would be an difficulty as to that. . Cr. J. Boyce: How long will it be before you are wanting the road sealed? . , Cr. Boyco pointed out that the amount collected in rates from the area affected (because the county rates were on the unimproved value) would be relatively small when compared with the possible cost of the upkeep of tho road. The cost of making the road would lie nothing for the council but in future the maintenance costs would far outstrip the amount collected in rates. The beach should outstrip both Tn.ngimoana and Foxton in popularity because of its situation. The chairman said the dedication of the road would have to bo completed before the council could act. Mr Priest indicated that the dedication of tho road would be completed before any further approach was made to the council. , , . M r Priest indicated that the roacl line would ho defined and steps taken for its dedication.
