CROQUET

MANAWATU TOURNAMENT. KEEN PLAY SEEN. Play in the annual tournament of the Manawatu Croquet Association is progressing at a good pace. The weather is cool and pleasant for play, and the greens are in good order. On Saturday all the games were played at the headquarters at Northern greens. In the championship singles match between Mrs Bryan and Mrs Burnett, which was completed yesterday morning, the former made a good recovery. When the game was pegged out the night before, Mrs Burnett had established a good lead with nice breaks and shooting. Yesterday morning, Mrs Bryan hit in and from the first return went to the peg and after Mrs Burnett had failed to hit in finished the game in her next turn. A championship single between Mrs Petrie and Mrs McMurray proved exciting. Playing beautiful croquet, Mrs Petrie early established a big lead, making a nice break from the second hoop to penultimate, and followed up with another break, Mrs McMurray having registered only three points. However, the latter made a splendid recovery and two or three times was almost in a winning position, but although picking up the long shots, she failed with the short ones.

Excellent croquet was played by Mrs McMurray in a championship singles match against Mi’s Manning, and she finished in record time with two breaks. Her opponent, who was given no opportunities, scored only two. Both Mrs T. Simpson and Mrs Morgan played well in their championship singles match. Mrs Morgan was in first and by stages reached the peg with one ball, with the second on penultimate. With black on third return and blue on rover, Mrs Simpson picked a good long shot, made a hoop with blue and put red on the stick, leaving Mrs Morgan two hoops to make. In a keen finish Mrs Morgan picked up the long shot and concluded the game. Good shots were played by Mrs Wood and Mrs Morgan in the first life of the open championship. Playing splendidly, Mrs Petrie defeated Mrs Burnett in short time with two perfect breaks, Mrs Burnett having no chance, in the A grand handicap singles. Mi’s Torstonson was well ill the lead when she played Mrs Colquhoun in the first life of the open championship, but Mrs Colquhoun played perseveringly to catch up until it was anybody’s game and eventually won nicely. Mrs Torstonson lost several opportunities. Additional results are : HANDICAP SINGLES. A Grade. First round.—Mrs Burnett (3) beat Mrs Manning (3J), 26—16.
