SCIENTIST URGES CONTROL. The need for establishing some control on tlie application of new inventions to industry to prevent too marked a dislocation in the capital and labour markets was stressed recently by the famous New Zealand scientist, Lord ■Rutherford, who is chairman of the Advisory Council of the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research. Lord Rutherford urged the Government to establish a preliminary survey committee to investigate the probable effect of new ideas and inventions in industry before their application. He maintained that, broadly speaking, scientific developments had opened new avenues of employment, absorbing great numbers of men and wonien, but neveitheless, some control might he desirable. ~ T , “A competent committee, Lord Rutherford stated, “would undoubtedly have foreseen the coming competition between motor and railway transport and have advised the Government ot the need for adjusting their competing claims before the difficulties became acute.”
