FLOODS IN SOUTH

FARM LANDS INUNDATED. Per Press Association. DUNEDIN, Nov. 26. South Otago has suffered considerable damage as a result of floods caused by heavy rain over tho last two days, and had the downpour continued much longer the position must have become serious. Balclutha this morning presented the appearance of an island in a sea of water from the Molyneux River, but fortunately the township itself escaped. The efficacy of recent protective river works was Strikingly demonstrated by the immunity of the borough centre from the flooding that caused a great deal of anxiety to stock-owmers outside the area at present enclosed by flood banks. The position outside the borough was very acute last night, many farmers being up all night building up banks in those places where stock tracks provided a place for the waters to break through. The Clutha and Matau A. and P. Society’s show' has been postponed on account of the fact that the showground is under w'ater in places six feet in depth. Flooding also occurred in the Waitaliuna district, many people having to leave their houses.

Minor slips caused blockages to some roads, which are now mostly clear.
