BIRDS EXTERMINATED.

RATS ON LORD HOWE ISLAND. Mr K. A. Hindwood, who returned to Sydney recently, said that more than half of the varieties of land birds on Lord Howe Island had been exterminated because of the depredations of rats. Only five varieties of land birds appeared to be living on the island, he said, and most of them were found on the southern section of the island, which is mountainous. Eight varieties of land birds had been exterminated. Many of these birds had nested in hollows of trees, and their eggs had been an easy mark for rats. Thousands of rats were killed each year for the Board of Control’s payment of 4d a tail.
