LUTHERAN CHURCH.

SALE OF WORK. BY LADIES’ GUILD. The eighth annua] sale of work of tho Lutheran Church Ladies’ Guild was held in the hall yesterday afternoon, and drew a large attendance. The function was oflicia lly ouened by the Mayoress (Airs A. E. Alansford), who was accompanied by her niece, Miss C. Jones, of Dunedin. In introducing Mrs Mansford, llev. A. Christensen referred sympathetically to the many cal's made upon her time and that of the Mayor by public duties, and said how much they appreciated her attendance there that afternoon.

Airs Mansford w?s then presented with a charming bouquet (made by Mrs J. E. Larsen) of pink roses, blue delphiniums, and fern, by little Peter Christensen. After expressing her pleasure at being present, the Mayoress pointed out that the Church was the main foundation of civilised society. The Lutheran Church had been 'connected with the earliest history of 1 Palmerston North, and she was glad to see that it still preserved its own identity. Such functions as the one she was opening, besides being necessary to raise funds, had a further purpose in giving members of the guild a common interest and assisting in social development. Mrs Mansford expressed appreciation of the assistance the guild had given to the Central Relief Fund and added that it was guilds 6uch as theirs which had made the relief work possible. Mrs P. Sorensen (president of the guild), in thanking Airs Alansford for her attendance, mentioned that it was the first time a Alayoress had been present at a Lutheran Church sale of work in Palmerston North. The stalls were laden with a pleasing variety of articles, and were brightly decorated, the Danish colours (red and white) predominating. Goods found a ready sale and it is expected that tho church funds will be considerably augmented. The room where afternoon tea was served was prettily arranged with flowers with twisted streamers overhead. Stalls and these in charge were: Fancywork. Airs H. Afortenscn, Airs V. J. Conlin, Aliss E. Sorensen; produce, Airs AI. Voss, Airs E. Winter, Airs A. Dawick. Airs L. Taylor (sec: retary of the guild); cakes, Airs N. P. Nielsen, Airs A. Dittmore, Airs At, Burmeister: sweets, Airs W. A.
