ENGLISH CRICKETER.

STRANGE ADVENTURES. Mr Roy Sheffield, the opening batsman for the Essex County cricket team, who is at present visiting Australia, spends most winters in travelling in search of adventure. One of his trips was 1700 miles down the Paraguay River to Buenos Aires. For some time he was searching for Colonel Fawcett, whose disappearance in South America is one of the mysteries of this century. In Paraguay, during the Gran Chaco war, Mr Sheffield was mistaken for a Bolivian spy, and was arrested. When he arrived at Ascencion, he was taken to prison, before the eyes of crowds of townspeople. Later, through the efforts of the British Consul, he was released. “After this little trouble, I was practically penniless,” said Mr Sheffield. “The fare to England was £2O, and I only had about £l2. I was forced to return as a ‘destitute British seaman.’ ” Mr Sheffield said that in other winters he had made a 300-mile trip through Basutoland and had s pent some months in northern Canada, where he worked in lumber camps and with fur-trappers.
