PERSONAL.
The Governor-General (Lord Galway) who is at present visiting the South Island, was in Dunedin, yesterday. In, the evening he was installed as Grand Master of Freemasonry in New Zealand.
A former president of the Now Zealand Institute of Surveyors, Mr Preston Chambers, of Auckland, died suddenly at Helensville, yesterday, at the age of 82, Mr Chambers was born in the Hunter River district, New South Wales, and while he was on a visit to New Zealand, in 1893, the late Hon. G. F. Richardson, formerly Minister ot Lands, induced him to remain in the Dominion, and for seven years he was engaged in roading the west coast settlement reserves.
The death occurred last night, at Dunedin, of Hon. John MacGregor, aged 86. He entered into partnership in 1876 with Mr Peter Duncan in the well-known legal firm of Duncan and MacGregor, and the long partnership was only terminated by the death of Mr Duncan in 1927. Mr MacGregor was appointed to the Legislative Council in 1892, retiring at the end of seven years, and was again appointed to the Upper House in 1914 and was a member continuously till 1935.
