Mrs J. Landels is a Hastings visitor to Palmerston North/ and is staying with her daughter, Mrs A. G. Gerrand, of Langstone Avenue.

The death has occurred at Edinburgh of Miss ivlary Fairburn, who was the first matron at the Collegiate School, Wanganui, and who later went to St. Margaret’s College, Dunedin.

Misses A. and X. Leithead, of Napier, are visiting Woodville, where they are the guests of Mrs It. H. Rhodes, and will visit Pahiatua before returning home. Miss D Wright, matron of the Awapuni Home, is tspending a month’s holiday in Auckland, where she has already been for a week. Miss E. T. Smith, 6ub-matron, is acting in Miss Wright’s stead during her absence. The insignia of Dame of Grace of the Order of St. John of Jerusalem was conferred on Lady Ferguson, at Dunedin, oil Wednesday evening by the Governor-General, Lord Galway, on behalf of His Majesty the King. Miss Connop, the boxing queen candidate in the carnival being conducted at Hastings, who is visiting Palmerston North, was introduced to the audience at the boxing match held in the Opera House, last night. Spending vacations in Palmerston North are Miss Peggy Young daughter of Mr and Mrs J. C. Young, North Street, who is a student at Canterbury university College; Miss Helen Luke, daughter of Mr and Mrs C. R. Luke, Victoria Avenue, who has , been furthering her studies at Dunedin University, and Miss Margaret Oram, daughter of Mr and Mrs M. H. Oram, from Canterbury University College. The wedding was solemnised at Capetown, on October 5, of Mary Veronica, youngest daughter of the late Mr W. C. Macdonald, of Salisbury, Rhodesia, and of Mrs F. J. Moore, of Burgess Hill, Sussex. She is a niece of Mr A. K. Scobie Mackenzie and Dr. W. Marshall Macdonald, of Wellington, and a great niece of the late Sir Francis Dillon Bell. The marriage took place from the house of her sister, Mrs D. S. Blades. The bridegroom was Richard Cyril Neale, third son of the late Sydney R. Shutte, and of Mrs Sliutte, of Kirkwood, Eastern Province, South Africa. The future home of the young couple will be in South Africa. The bride’s mother is the "well-known authoress, Sheila Macdonald. Miss Madeleine Slade, the English disciple of Mahatma Gandhi, who is now known by her Indian name of Mira Bei, is suffering from typhoid. She was recently attended by Gnndli: himself, according to a Reuter telegram from Wardha, Central Provinces. Miss Slade, daughter of the late Admiral Sir Edmund Slade, commander of the British naval forces in the East Indies, became a disciple of Mahatma Gandhi several years ago. Recently she has been working hard in a “rural uplift’ campaign in support of Gandhi’s theory that the villages are the moral and economic backbone of the country, and that therefore villagers should be given educational facilities and helped to revive their peasant industries.
