AUCTIONEERS’ REPLY.

REQUESTS TO REJECT STOCK. The Southern Hawke’s Bay provincial executive of the Farmers’ Union has received a reply from the secretary of the Southern Hawke’s Bay Auctioneers’ Association to tlie resolution passed at a previous meeting drawing attention to the growing practice 01 purchasers or dealers asking the auctioneer—before lie appeals to tlie vendor—if the vendor will throw out One of the number, with the intention ot disparaging the stock being offered. “Whilst admitting that on occasions this practice has occurred, it is by 110 means a growing one, nor does it oecui frequently,” advised Mr H. T. Russell. "Vendors must realise that in the event of a purchaser wishing to buy sheep which either have to be sent away to another district, they certainly would not purchase sheep having any defect or which did not comply with the description of the stock that they required. In a number of cases a line of sheep may be sent in, in which it is clear to the auctioneer that one of them is not 'up to the standard of the others, and the auctioneer seeks the owner’s permission to have this one thrown out, and sold separately. You will readily understand this practice would naturally increase the value of the line.” It was decided to forward a reply that tlie executive would be willing to meet the chairman of tlie Stock Auctioneers’ Association, as suggested in the letter.
