LABOUR DAY.
PERMIT FOR PROCESSION. Permission was sought from the Palmerston North City Council by the Labour Day Committee, last evening, to hold a procession through the Square on Labour Day (October 26), in the forenoon, in 'recognition of the advent of the 40-hour week. “I do not see why the request should not be acceded to,” commented the Mayor (Mr A. E. Mansford), “so long as they comply with the regulations that have been laid down.” The Mayor added that lie had an idea that, according to a by-law passed some years ago, such applications had to have the approval Of the Mayor. On the motion of the Mayor, it was decided to grant permission, subject to a full explanation being made of what the procession was going to he, and the nature of the speeches. Cr W. 13. Cameron seconded the motion, stating that he remembered with pleasure the Labour Day speeches which used to be made in Dunedin.
